"A Program That Provides A New Beginning For Students"
Entrance Criteria The following criteria select students for participation in this alternative program. The students must be:
- 15 years to 17 years-of-age (No student will be selected who has reached age 18)
- In grade 9th, 10th, or 11th
- 1or 2 years below grade level. (No student can be below three or more grade levels)
- Recommended by the principal of the sending school and the receiving school administrators
- Interviewed and accepted by the alternative program's Behavior Intervention Team (BIT)
- Classified as non-performing academically
- Attendance has not exceeded 45 days (This is a full marking period of a 180-day school year. The Camden Board of Education requires a minimum of 162 days in attendance for a secondary school student to earn course credit. The CCALP-allowance of over twice the Boards' unexcused absences is testament to its commitment to providing the students at-risk with a solid opportunity to turn their lives around).
Teachers must respect the potential strengths of students rather than remain armed with a set of mythologies, masquerading as theories of social science, which only discourage the students from emotionally investing in education. Teachers at CCALP must battle to reject tendencies to confuse race, class, and ethnic bias with academic standards. Teachers must be prepared to connect to the students' language, what will provide opportunity to be successful in business or education.
Parental Involvement
- Parents are encouraged to support students in the following ways:
- Attend all programs involving parent participation, such as field trips.
- Participate in lesson support at home
- Share in the BIT process when it involves their child
- Students must work in an approved job supervised by a school-appointed job developer. Each student is required to work in a job or perform community service on an as-needed basis to maintain enrollment in the program.
- These groups will support the students in their efforts to become successful. The group will mentor NCLB curriculum components to assist the students in their academic achievement. Students will achieve benchmarks set forth by the Department of Education as administered by Camden City School Administration.
The following criteria determine students' positive exit from this alternative program. The students will successfully exit who:
- Demonstrate academic preparation for the appropriate grade level through proficiency in basic communication and computational skills (with necessary provisions and support systems) or 11th graders who provide evidence that they may be able to obtain a diploma by successfully completing the SRA process upon reaching 12th grade. Special Education students' positive exit will be based on Child Study Team recommendation and an Individual Educational Program (IEP), with input of the BIT.
- Demonstrate social skills necessary for success in a larger, less structured school setting
- Attend a BIT conference involving review of academic, attitude, and attendance success, and are approved.
- Demonstrate observable evidence of combined readiness to face the challenge of adjusting to an uncertain future (i.e., optimism, problem-solving, inquiry skills).
The following criteria determine students' negative removal from this alternative program. The students will be removed who:
- Violate the age limit rule of 18 years-old
- Are convicted of drug possession
- Violate the BIT approved probation point system for behavior
- Are convicted of fighting on property owned or contracted by Camden City Public Schools
- Consistently refuse to participate in teaching and learning activities, with approval of the BIT
- Are convicted of theft, damaging facility property or creating dangerous or threatening conditions for learning, following conference and approval of the BIT
- Openly defiant to authority in the process of teaching and learning
The School, teachers, and its program will provide a quality education for every student entering Camden City Academic Laboratory Program (CCALP). Every student can learn and expected to learn, through a cooperative interaction with teachers, students, administrators, parents, community and businesses. The key word in education must be relevance.
